How to control humidity and clean mold in JVC apartment?« Back to Previous Page

Our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been feeling way more humid than usual since the weather changed. I’ve started noticing small black speckles appearing in the corners of our master bedroom closet, on the wall that faces the outside. I’m really worried it’s the start of a mold problem. What’s the most effective way to control the humidity and clean this to stop it from spreading throughout the room?

That's a classic sign of mold growth, and your observation about the outside wall and recent humidity is spot on. In Dubai's climate, exterior walls can be cooler due to constant AC, causing warm, humid air to condense on them—this trapped moisture is what mold thrives on.

First, control the humidity. Your AC is your primary dehumidifier; ensure it's set to a consistent temperature, ideally between 22-24°C. Run it continuously, even when you're out, to maintain stable conditions. For a closet, a small disposable desiccant dehumidifier can help absorb excess moisture in that enclosed space. Improve air circulation by not overpacking the closet and occasionally leaving the door ajar.

For cleaning, wear a mask and gloves. For small speckles on a hard surface, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted detergent can be effective. Scrub gently and dry the area thoroughly immediately after. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can push spores into the air.

If the speckles are on drywall, the problem is more serious as the mold may have penetrated the material. Scrubbing can worsen it. Given its location on an exterior wall, the issue could be related to a minor leak or significant thermal bridging.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection is advisable. They can use a moisture meter to quantify the dampness within the wall and take tape-lift samples for lab analysis to identify the species. This diagnosis is crucial, as it determines whether surface cleaning is sufficient or if the affected section of drywall needs to be safely removed and replaced to resolve the issue permanently.
