DIY or professional for black mold in Dubai apartment?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It seems to have spread from the wall behind it, and the room has felt more humid than usual since we started running the AC constantly this summer. I'm worried about the health effects and the damage to our belongings. For a problem like this in a Dubai apartment, is it better to try and handle it myself with products from Ace Hardware, or should I call a professional mold remediation company, and what would the cost range be for that?

Given the black mold spreading from the wall and the persistent humidity, this is a situation for professional assessment. In Dubai's climate, constant AC use can create significant condensation within walls if there's a small leak or insulation issue, turning a hidden space into a perfect mold incubator.

DIY cleaning with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution is only for surface-level mold on non-porous materials. It will not address the moisture source or the mold growing within the wall cavity, which is likely here. Improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination further.

A professional inspection is crucial to locate the moisture source—often a leaking AC condensation line, pipe, or poor thermal insulation causing cold spots and condensation. They use moisture meters and borescopes to see inside walls. Remediation involves isolating the area, removing affected materials like drywall, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent regrowth. The cost for a professional job is not trivial, as it is a process, not a simple cleaning, but it is the only way to ensure the problem is solved at its root and your air quality is restored. For health safety and protecting your belongings, a science-based approach is necessary.
