Black mold in closet: DIY clean or call Dubai Hills management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it's gotten worse. What's the best way to clean this myself, or should I immediately call my building management in Dubai Hills?

The black spots are likely mold growth, which is common in Dubai's climate due to high humidity and condensation on cooler exterior walls. Your first step is to assess the size and source. If the affected area is smaller than one square meter and limited to the surface, a DIY approach may be sufficient.

For DIY, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar with four parts water or a diluted detergent. Scrub the area gently, then dry it completely with a fan. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and can push roots deeper into porous materials like drywall.

However, since the mold is on an exterior wall and has worsened with humidity, the underlying cause is likely persistent moisture seepage or a thermal bridge causing condensation. DIY cleaning will only be a temporary fix if the moisture source isn't addressed. In such cases, especially within a community like Dubai Hills, you should report this to your building management. They are responsible for investigating and remedying structural issues like potential water intrusion from the building envelope, in line with Dubai's Strata Law.

If the mold returns after cleaning, covers a large area, or has a musty odor, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture source and species of mold, as some types require specific remediation protocols.
