Mold in Dubai villa closet: DIY clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has had a damp, earthy smell since the humidity really spiked a few weeks ago. I finally pulled everything out and found a bunch of black and green fuzzy spots all over the back wall and on a couple of leather bags. We run the AC constantly but it doesn't seem to help this enclosed space. For a job like this, should I just try to clean it myself with bleach, or is it worth getting a professional mold removal company in, and what would that roughly cost for a single room?

This situation in a Jumeirah villa is a classic case of hidden mold growth, almost certainly triggered by Dubai's high ambient humidity and a lack of air circulation in the enclosed closet. The fuzzy growth on the wall and your leather goods indicates an established colony, not just surface condensation.

For a small, contained area on a non-porous surface, a thorough DIY cleaning can be effective. However, your case involves porous materials (drywall, leather) where mold roots deeply penetrate. Bleach is not recommended; it only bleaches the surface and does not kill the roots, and its high water content can actually feed the mold. A more appropriate DIY approach would be to use a dedicated mold remover or a solution of white vinegar and water, scrubbing thoroughly. The damaged drywall may need to be cut out and replaced.

Given the extent you've described and the value of the affected items (leather bags), a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can identify the moisture source—which could be a small plumbing leak in the wall, condensation from a cold water pipe, or simply trapped humid air—and ensure the mold is fully remediated, not just surface-cleaned. The cost for a single room remediation is typically more accessible than a full-home job, but varies significantly based on the square footage of affected material and the required containment procedures. You should request an on-site inspection for an accurate assessment. Professionals will also use air scrubbers and dehumidifiers to properly dry the area, which is critical in our climate to prevent immediate regrowth.
