Can I clean mold in Dubai apartment myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been so humid lately and I just found a patch of black and green spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some winter clothes. It's been getting worse since the weather changed a couple of weeks ago. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies here in Dubai?

This depends entirely on the size and location of the growth. For a small, surface-level patch like the one described, a DIY approach can be effective if you address the underlying humidity issue.
In Dubai's climate, that persistent dampness is almost certainly from condensation due to high indoor humidity, exacerbated by your AC's performance and room layout. The closet corner is a classic spot for stagnant, humid air to settle. Before cleaning, identify and fix the source: ensure your AC is set to a consistent temperature, check that the closet isn't blocking an AC vent, and consider using a dehumidifier or increasing airflow in the room. For the cleaning itself, a vinegar solution is often more effective than bleach for surface mold on porous materials like drywall or wood, as vinegar can penetrate deeper. Bleach only removes the surface colour. Scrub the area gently, allow it to dry completely, and dispose of any porous materials like cardboard boxes that are contaminated. Professional remediation is strongly advised if the patch is larger than one square meter, if you suspect the mold has spread inside the wall cavity (often indicated by a persistent musty smell), or if household members are experiencing respiratory issues. Professionals use containment and air scrubbing to prevent spores from dispersing during cleaning, which is a significant risk with a DIY approach. In many cases, a professional inspection and air quality test from a company with its own microbiology lab is the most reliable way to determine the true extent of the problem and verify it has been resolved after cleaning. |
