How urgently should I treat black mold in my Dubai apartment?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building, and we're in a Jumeirah Lakes Towers apartment. With the humidity coming back, I'm worried it will spread quickly. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated before it becomes a major health or structural issue?

Black mold in a JLT apartment should be addressed within a week, especially with humidity rising. The exterior wall location points to a condensation issue, common here where year-round AC meets hot, humid air, creating a perfect environment for mold. The porous wall materials can allow it to spread behind surfaces if not treated correctly.
For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can manage it yourself with proper precautions. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then thoroughly dry it. Avoid bleach, as it doesn’t prevent regrowth and can damage drywall. The critical step is identifying and controlling the moisture source. Check for AC duct condensation leaks or insufficient insulation in that external wall cavity. If the area is larger, has a persistent musty odor, or returns after cleaning, a professional inspection is warranted to assess potential hidden growth within the wall. Remediation often involves controlled removal of affected materials and applying antimicrobial solutions. In many cases, a humidity assessment is also needed to prevent recurrence. For verification, any reputable service should provide before-and-after lab reports showing spore count reduction, not just a visual clean. This is the standard for confirming the issue is resolved. |
