Is black mold causing our headaches in Jumeirah villa« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah. Ever since the heavy fog and humidity started a couple of months ago, my husband and I have been waking up with stuffy noses and headaches. I’m really worried this is the cause. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of it ourselves, or should we definitely call a professional?

Black mould can certainly cause the symptoms you're describing. The persistent stuffy noses and headaches are a common reaction to mould spores, which are likely being circulated by your AC system. The recent humidity and fog have created ideal conditions for mould growth, especially in cooler, less-ventilated areas like a closet on an outside wall.

For a small, visible patch (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Do not use bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can worsen indoor air quality.

However, a professional inspection is strongly recommended in your case. The visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg; the mould may have spread inside the wall cavity due to condensation from the AC or a minor leak. The only way to confirm the root cause and full extent is through a moisture survey and, if needed, air or surface sampling analysed by a microbiology lab to identify the species. This is a common issue in Dubai villas where temperature differences between the hot outside walls and cooled interior create condensation.

A proper remediation will first identify and fix the moisture source, contain the area to prevent cross-contamination, safely remove the affected materials, and use HEPA filtration to clean the air. Since you are experiencing health effects, a professional approach that verifies the environment is safe through post-remediation testing is the most effective course of action.
