Black mold in Dubai closet: how urgent and what to do?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has started to have a really damp, earthy smell. I pulled out some winter clothes I stored a few months ago and found fuzzy black spots on a couple of my jackets. We run the AC constantly, but the humidity has been brutal lately. How urgent is it to deal with this, and should I be throwing all the clothes out immediately?

This is a very common issue in Dubai apartments, especially during humid periods. The urgency is moderate to high, as the mold is actively growing on your belongings and indicates a persistent moisture problem in that enclosed space.
Do not immediately throw all the clothes out. Visible mold on a few items means spores are likely on others, but most can be salvaged. Remove all affected and unaffected items from the closet. For the visibly moldy jackets, a professional textile restoration service can often clean them effectively. For other items, wash them with a disinfectant laundry additive. Discard any items that are severely degraded. The critical step is finding and stopping the moisture source. In a JVC closet, the most likely culprits are a small AC condensate drain leak inside the wall or, more commonly, extreme condensation caused by the cold closet wall meeting the humid apartment air. This is a year-round issue exacerbated by Dubai's climate. Running the AC constantly lowers the temperature but doesn't always address high humidity levels if the unit is undersized or not functioning optimally. Wipe down all closet surfaces with a diluted white vinegar solution. However, this only addresses surface mold. The mold you see is likely the tip of the iceberg; it can grow inside the wall if there's a leak. A professional inspection with a borescope can identify hidden moisture and mold behind the drywall without unnecessary demolition. They can also measure the humidity at the wall surface to diagnose the condensation issue. Resolving the root cause, whether through repairing a drain line or improving ventilation, is essential to prevent rapid regrowth. |
