Black mold health risk: DIY or professional removal cost?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. I’m worried about the health risks and how much it will cost to get a professional to properly remove it and check the rest of the apartment in Jumeirah. Is this a DIY job, or should I hire a company, and what’s a reasonable price to expect for a two-bedroom apartment?

The health risk from black mold is real, especially for children. While not all dark-colored mold is the infamous Stachybotrys, its presence alongside symptoms like coughing strongly warrants investigation. In Dubai's high humidity, mold thrives on condensation behind furniture and within wall cavities from AC use.

This is not a DIY job. Disturbing the mold releases a high concentration of spores into your apartment's air, potentially worsening your family's exposure. Proper remediation requires containment of the area, specialized HEPA filtration to capture spores, and the correct antimicrobial agents to treat the source.

For a two-bedroom apartment in Jumeirah, expect the cost to be influenced by the extent of the infestation behind the wardrobe and whether the mold has penetrated the drywall. A reputable company will first conduct an inspection and possibly air quality testing to define the scope, which determines the final remediation price. Always request a detailed assessment and quote upfront; the most credible providers will be transparent about their process and can provide documentation of the results. The initial inspection is key to understanding what you're dealing with.
