How to dry AC closet and prevent mold in JVC?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be leaking a bit of water into the closet where the unit is housed. Every time I check, the wall behind the clothes feels damp and I'm terrified that black mold is going to start growing inside the wall itself. What’s the best way to completely dry this out and prevent mold from taking hold for good?

Immediately stop the moisture source first. The damp wall indicates your AC's condensate drain line is likely clogged, a very common issue in Dubai's high-humidity climate where ACs run constantly. Turn off the AC unit to prevent further water leakage.
Forced drying is critical. Use a high-powered fan directed at the damp wall and a dehumidifier inside the closet for at least 48-72 hours. In JVC's humidity, simply airing it out is insufficient; you need active equipment to draw moisture from the wall cavity. Remove everything from the closet to allow full air circulation. Once completely dry, inspect the wall and inside the closet for any visible discoloration or a musty odor. Staining or a persistent smell suggests mold may have already begun growing inside the wall, which requires professional assessment. For peace of mind, a moisture meter can verify the wall's internal dryness. Preventing recurrence requires fixing the root cause. Have a licensed HVAC technician clear and flush the condensate drain line. To manage humidity long-term, consider running a small desiccant dehumidifier in that closet, as the enclosed space traps moist air. If the wall was damp for more than a few days, a professional inspection is wise. Mold can establish behind drywall in under 72 hours in our climate. An inspector can use a borescope to check inside the wall without destructive drilling. |
