What removes black mold from shower grout permanently?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It's worse in the corner near the window in our Discovery Gardens apartment. I try to keep it dry, but the humidity just seems to get trapped in there. What's the most effective product I can find locally to kill this for good and prevent it from coming back?

Black mold in shower grout is common in Dubai due to the high ambient humidity and condensation from temperature changes with year-round AC use. For a Discovery Gardens apartment, the window corner is a classic trouble spot where trapped moisture creates an ideal environment.

Start with a thorough cleaning using a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and white vinegar. Scrub vigorously with a stiff brush. For persistent growth, a hydrogen peroxide-based solution or a diluted chlorine bleach cleaner (ensure the area is well-ventilated) can be effective. These are widely available at local supermarkets and hardware stores.

"Permanently" is difficult in our climate; prevention is more reliable than a one-time cure. After cleaning, apply a quality grout sealer to create a moisture barrier. The most critical step is improving ventilation. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and keep the window open when possible to reduce trapped humidity. Wiping down wet surfaces with a squeegee immediately after use makes a significant difference.

If the mold returns aggressively within weeks, penetrates deeply, or covers a large area (over one square meter), the issue may be behind the tiles. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters can identify hidden problems that DIY cleaning cannot address.
