AC mold causing toddler's runny nose: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah apartment has been leaking a bit onto the carpet in the hallway for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a small black patch of mold spreading from the corner of the wall. My husband thinks we can just wipe it down with bleach, but I'm worried it's gone deeper into the wall and could be why our toddler has had a persistent runny nose. Is this something we can safely handle ourselves or do we absolutely need to call a professional cleaning service?

A leaking AC unit in Dubai's climate creates a persistent dampness that allows mould to grow rapidly, often deep inside walls or under flooring. The black patch is a visible sign, but the hidden growth inside the cavity is the primary concern.

For a toddler with a persistent runny nose, this is a significant health indicator. Mould exposure commonly exacerbates allergy and asthma symptoms, and infants are more susceptible to these irritants. While bleach can remove surface discoloration, it does not address the root moisture problem or the mould colony within the building materials. The porous drywall and insulation behind will likely need to be removed and replaced.

This situation requires a professional assessment. DIY attempts often disturb the colony, releasing a higher concentration of spores into your living space. A proper inspection will identify the full extent of the water damage and mould growth using moisture meters and, if necessary, air or surface sampling to identify the species. In Dubai, remediation must follow strict containment protocols to prevent cross-contamination to other areas of your apartment.

The first step is to stop the leak at its source by having your AC unit serviced. Then, engage a certified mould inspector to assess the damage to the wall and carpet. They can provide a scope of work for remediation, which will ensure the problem is resolved safely for your family.
