coudl this mold be causing my kids' coughing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and I just found a bunch of black spots behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Mirdif, and it feels slightly damp to the touch. Could this mold be causing their health issues, and what's the fastest way to deal with it properly?

Yes, the mold you've found is very likely contributing to your children's persistent coughing. The damp wall behind the wardrobe is a classic breeding ground for mold spores, which become airborne and are easily inhaled, irritating the respiratory tract. Children are particularly susceptible to these irritants, often experiencing symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and nasal congestion.

Given Dubai's high humidity, especially at night, and the constant use of AC which can create temperature differentials, condensation on exterior walls is a common issue in villas. This trapped moisture behind furniture provides the perfect environment for mold growth. The first step is to move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow the area to dry completely.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the exact mold species through lab analysis, which is important as some types are more problematic than others, and determine the full extent of the moisture problem, which may not be visible. Remediation involves more than just wiping the spots; the source of moisture must be addressed to prevent immediate regrowth. A proper remediation will include containing the area, safely removing the contaminated materials, and treating the space to significantly reduce the spore count. After remediation, a post-test verifies the environment is safe. Addressing this promptly will help alleviate your children's symptoms and protect the structure of your home.
