Is mold under my AC vent an urgent issue?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet below the vent. I just pulled the carpet back and found a patch of black and green mold about the size of my hand that’s been growing there, probably for a couple of weeks in this humidity. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Yes, this is an urgent issue that requires immediate attention. In Dubai's climate, with its high humidity and continuous AC operation, a water leak creates a perfect environment for rapid mold growth. The visible patch is likely just the surface; the moisture has almost certainly seeped into the carpet underlay and possibly the subfloor.
Handling it yourself with bleach is not recommended. Bleach is ineffective on porous materials like carpet and concrete, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. It can also release harmful fumes in an enclosed space. For a patch this size and given the hidden moisture, professional assessment is needed. The priority is stopping the source. The AC drain line is likely clogged, a common issue here due to dust and biofilm buildup. A certified HVAC technician should clear the line and check the condensate pan. Only after the leak is fixed should mold remediation begin to prevent immediate regrowth. A professional will contain the area, remove the affected carpet section, and use HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial agents designed for porous materials to treat the subfloor. They can also verify with moisture meters that the area is truly dry. Given the potential for hidden growth and the health risks of airborne spores, a proper remediation protocol is the safest approach for your indoor air quality. |
