Can I treat small closet mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and I’m worried the recent humidity made it worse. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar solution before it spreads?

Small, isolated mold spots in a closet can often be treated yourself, but it depends on the cause. Given its location on an exterior wall, this is likely due to condensation forming where the cool interior meets the warm, humid outside air, a common issue here.
For an area smaller than one square foot, you can clean it. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A vinegar solution is a good start; spray it on, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a brush and wipe clean. Ensure the area is completely dry afterward. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can push spores into the air. However, the key is addressing the moisture source. This spot will return unless you improve ventilation or reduce humidity. Use a dehumidifier or a desiccant in the closet, and ensure there's a small air gap between your stored items and the wall for circulation. If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, if the area is larger than a square foot, or if you notice a persistent musty smell, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify if there's a hidden leak in the wall or inadequate insulation causing the condensation. In Dubai's climate, what appears as a small surface issue can sometimes indicate a larger, concealed problem that requires targeted remediation to prevent recurrence. |
