How to treat early mold on villa closet ceiling?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Al Barsha has been so humid this summer, and I've just spotted small black patches starting to form in the corner of my walk-in closet where the walls meet the ceiling. We run the AC constantly, but the clothes in that area still feel slightly damp. What's the most effective way to treat this early stage mold and prevent it from spreading, especially since it's on a painted wall?

That damp feeling in the closet and visible black patches are a classic sign of condensation issues common in Dubai villas. The constant AC can create a significant temperature differential between the cool room and the warmer ceiling void, leading to moisture buildup on colder surfaces, especially in less-ventilated areas like closets.
For a small, early-stage patch on a painted wall, immediate action can often manage it. First, address the humidity source. A standalone dehumidifier placed in the room for 24-48 hours can help draw out the excess moisture from the air and your clothes. Ensure there's adequate air circulation; avoid overpacking the closet and consider leaving the door ajar to allow conditioned air to flow through. To treat the visible mold, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Avoid simply wiping it, as this can spread spores. Instead, lightly mist the area with a diluted white vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 1 part water) or a dedicated fungicidal cleaner. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then gently scrub with a soft brush and wipe clean with a damp cloth. Do not oversaturate the drywall. Allow the area to dry completely before repainting with a mold-inhibiting primer and paint. Prevention is critical. If this is a recurring issue, the underlying cause is likely poor insulation in the ceiling/roof space, which is a frequent construction oversight here. This allows the hot, humid air from the attic to condense on the cooler closet ceiling. A professional inspection can identify if additional insulation or improved ventilation in the roof void is needed to permanently resolve the condensation problem and prevent future mold growth. |
