Is a small mold patch causing persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a little bit onto the carpet for a couple of months, and now I'm seeing a small black patch of mold in the corner. My husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and a cough that just won't go away, and I'm starting to get worried. Is this kind of persistent cough a common reaction to a small amount of mold, or should we be more concerned and see a doctor immediately?

A persistent cough and stuffy nose are common reactions to mold exposure, even from a small patch. The continuous AC leakage has created a damp environment in your carpet, an ideal breeding ground for mold spores that become airborne and are inhaled while you sleep. In Dubai's humid climate, this problem can escalate quickly.

You should be concerned enough to take immediate action. The first step is to stop the moisture source; have an HVAC technician repair the AC leak. For the mold itself, do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing it can release a large number of spores. A small patch may be addressed by a professional remediation team who will contain the area. Given the symptoms, a professional inspection is highly recommended to assess the full extent, as mold can grow unseen within the carpet underlay or behind skirting boards.

While a doctor can treat the symptoms, eliminating the source is the only permanent solution. For verification, a lab test can identify the mold species, which is useful information for both your remediator and physician. In the UAE, indoor air quality is a recognized health concern, and addressing hidden mold sources is a standard part of resolving persistent respiratory issues.
