Is urgent mold removal needed for closet spots?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s an interior wall, and with the humidity lately, the musty smell is getting stronger. How urgent is it to get this professionally removed, and can it wait until the weekend, or should I call someone immediately?

It is urgent to address, but likely not an emergency requiring immediate same-day service if you can take interim steps. The combination of visible growth and a strengthening musty smell indicates active mold, which will continue to spread. In Dubai's high humidity, even interior walls can develop condensation, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like closets.

For now, keep the closet door open to improve air circulation and run a dehumidifier in the bedroom if you have one. Do not attempt to scrub the spots yourself, as this can aerosolize spores and spread them. The weekend is an acceptable timeframe to schedule a professional assessment, provided the area is isolated.

A proper remediation involves more than just wiping the surface. The root cause, often condensation from temperature differentials or a hidden moisture source, must be identified and corrected. Professionals will contain the area, use HEPA filtration to capture spores, and safely remove the contaminated materials. For porous items like winter clothes, specialized cleaning is required to prevent recontamination.

Given the climate, a professional inspection is recommended to determine the extent behind the wall and ensure it is resolved correctly. Companies with their own microbiology labs can identify the species and provide a post-remediation verification test, which is the only way to confirm the space is truly clean and the underlying issue is fixed.
