Is this dangerous mold behind my bedroom wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. I'm really worried because my toddler has been sneezing a lot lately and I'm terrified it's mold. We're in an older building in Deira and I'm not sure if this is a job for a regular cleaner or if I need a special company. What's the safest and most effective way to get this professionally tested and removed?

It's understandable to be concerned, especially with a toddler showing symptoms. In Dubai's climate, that black growth is very likely mold, as high humidity and condensation behind furniture in air-conditioned rooms create a perfect breeding ground.

This scenario is not for a regular cleaner. Disturbing it improperly can release a large number of spores into the air, potentially worsening your toddler's sneezing and causing other respiratory irritation. The safest approach is a professional inspection first. A certified inspector will assess the extent of the growth, identify the moisture source (often a small leak or condensation from the AC), and ideally take an air or surface sample for a microbiology lab to identify the species. This lab report is crucial—it confirms if it's a common, irritant-type mold or something more problematic, guiding the remediation plan.

For removal, look for a company specializing in mold remediation, not just general cleaning. The process should include isolating the area to prevent cross-contamination, using HEPA filtration to clean the air, safely removing the contaminated materials, and most importantly, identifying and fixing the underlying moisture issue to prevent it from returning. Always request to see their methodology and ask for verification that the post-remediation air quality is within safe, acceptable limits.
