Is mold around my AC vent dangerous to clean myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp smell, and I've just found patches of black and green fuzzy stuff around the vent in my bedroom. It’s been like this for a couple of weeks and I'm worried it's making us cough. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach and a cloth, or do I need to call a professional company to deal with it?

Cleaning visible mold around an AC vent yourself can be risky, as you're likely dispersing spores directly into the breathing air of your bedroom. For small, isolated patches (under one square foot), a careful DIY approach may be sufficient, but your described symptoms and the extent suggest a larger issue.

In Dubai's climate, the constant humidity and AC condensation create a perfect environment for mold. The damp smell and visible growth at the vent strongly indicate a problem within the AC unit itself or the ductwork, which you cannot effectively clean with a cloth. Bleach is not recommended for porous surfaces and only bleaches the mold without killing the root structure; it also fails to address the moisture source.

Given the recurring cough and multiple colors of growth (black and green), a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can identify the species and the extent of the contamination, which is often far greater inside the system than what is visible. Reputable providers use containment methods and HEPA filtration during cleaning to prevent cross-contamination and will provide before-and-after testing to verify the results, which is a critical step often missed in DIY attempts.
