How to stop closet mold on leather in humid villa?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Mirdif villa has started to get these black speckles on the leather shoes and bags stored inside. I only noticed it after the recent humidity spike, and the room has a bit of a damp feel even with the AC running constantly. What's the best way to fix the airflow or control the moisture in there to stop it from coming back?

The black speckles are almost certainly mold, a common issue in Mirdif villas during high humidity periods. Leather is particularly vulnerable. The damp feel indicates high relative humidity inside the closet itself, which your room's AC isn't adequately managing.

Start by removing all items from the closet. For the mold on leather, gently wipe affected items with a soft, dry cloth followed by a slightly damp cloth with a drop of mild soap, then dry them completely in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight before storing elsewhere. To fix the environment, first ensure the closet is not overstuffed, as this restricts airflow. Leave some space between the wall and your storage units. Keep the closet doors slightly ajar to allow conditioned air to circulate. A small, portable desiccant dehumidifier placed inside the closet can make a significant difference; these are effective in small, enclosed spaces and are widely available.

For a more permanent solution, the issue may be that the room's AC is not running long enough to properly dehumidify the air, even if it's constantly on. Short cycling is common. An HVAC professional can assess if your unit is correctly sized for the space and its latent cooling (dehumidification) capacity. They might recommend a maintenance service to ensure the evaporator coil is clean and the drain line is clear, as this directly impacts moisture removal.

If the problem persists or you see visible mold growth on walls or surfaces, a professional inspection is recommended to identify any hidden condensation issues or leaks and to perform targeted cleaning. In many Dubai villas, the root cause is a combination of infiltration of humid external air and an AC system not optimized for humidity control.
