How to prevent bathroom mold in a humid climate?« Back to Previous Page

My ensuite bathroom in our Mirdif villa has no window and after every shower, the walls stay wet for hours. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed black speckles forming in the grout between the tiles near the ceiling. I run the exhaust fan, but it doesn't seem to be enough to dry it out completely. What’s the most effective way to stop this mold from spreading and prevent it for good, especially in our humid climate?

Bathroom mold in a Dubai villa is almost always due to persistent moisture and inadequate ventilation, especially in windowless bathrooms. The black speckles in your grout are a common sign of this issue, and the high ambient humidity here means surfaces take much longer to dry naturally.

Your first priority is to mechanically remove the existing mold from the grout. For small areas, a dedicated grout brush and a cleaning solution like diluted vinegar or a specifically formulated mold remover can be effective. Always wear a mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores.

Prevention is about controlling humidity. Since your exhaust fan isn't sufficient, run it for at least 30-60 minutes after your shower. Consider upgrading to a higher-capacity fan if possible. Wiping down the wet walls and glass with a squeegee immediately after showering is one of the most effective ways to remove the primary water source. If the mold is widespread, recurrent, or you suspect it has spread behind tiles, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and provide a lab analysis to identify the mold species, which dictates the correct remediation protocol for a long-term solution.
