What's the best local product to kill bathroom mold forever?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in my Mirdif villa has had this musty smell for weeks, but today I finally found the source: a patch of black mold spreading along the grout behind the toilet. It's in the small guest bathroom we hardly use, so the AC isn't on in there as often. What's the most effective product I can find locally to kill this for good and stop it from coming back?

Bleach-based cleaners are the most effective for immediate removal of surface mold on non-porous tiles, but they won't kill the roots deep within porous grout. For a lasting solution, you need to address the humidity that caused it.

The musty smell indicates active microbial growth. In Dubai’s climate, an unused bathroom becomes a perfect breeding ground due to stagnant, humid air. Simply wiping the surface won't stop it from returning. Start by scrubbing the visible mold with a dedicated grout brush and a product like Clorox or a similar hydrogen peroxide-based spray, which is less harsh than pure bleach. Ventilate the area extremely well during and after cleaning.

However, the key to "for good" is moisture control. Since the AC is seldom on, install a small exhaust fan if possible. After every shower or bath in any bathroom, run the AC or a dehumidifier for 30 minutes and squeegee the walls to remove standing water. Wipe down all wet surfaces, including the area behind the toilet.

If the mold patch is large (covering over one square meter), has a strong, persistent musty odor, or returns quickly after a thorough cleaning, the issue may be deeper within the wall. In these cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and possibly lab testing is needed to identify hidden water leaks or condensation problems that DIY methods can't fix.
