Safe DIY mold removal for a damp room?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the school holidays started, and I'm worried it's from the mold in our spare room. We stored some winter clothes in there and when I went to get something, I found a whole corner of the wall behind the wardrobe covered in black spots. The room always feels damp even though we barely use it. What's the safest way to clean this myself without putting my family at risk?

First, relocate your children from any area near that room and do not attempt cleaning until you've taken proper safety precautions. The persistent cough is a significant indicator that mold spores are already airborne and affecting indoor air quality.

For a small, contained area (less than one square meter), DIY cleaning can be attempted if you are in good health. You must wear an N95 respirator mask, nitrile gloves, and protective goggles to avoid inhaling spores or getting them on your skin. Isolate the room by closing the door and sealing the gap with tape and plastic sheeting if possible.

Ventilation is critical in Dubai's humid climate. Open a window in that room to create a cross-draft, but ensure the door is sealed so spores do not spread to other parts of the home. Scrub the affected wall surface with a solution of detergent and warm water. Avoid bleach, as it only discolors mold and does not address the root moisture problem. After scrubbing, dry the area completely using fans; this is the most important step to prevent immediate regrowth.

However, finding mold behind furniture often indicates a more serious, hidden issue. The dampness you feel is the core problem, likely caused by condensation from your AC or a minor leak. Simply cleaning the visible spots will not solve this. The mold may have penetrated the wallboard or insulation.

For a case involving children's health and a consistently damp room, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the moisture source. In the UAE, proper remediation involves containment, HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and antimicrobial treatment, followed by verification through post-remediation testing to confirm the environment is safe. This is the only way to be certain the health risk for your family has been addressed.
