Can I clean this apartment mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a bit, and now I've found a patch of black and green fuzzy mold about the size of my hand on the wall behind the bedroom curtain. It's been there for maybe a couple of weeks and has a really damp, earthy smell. Is this something I can safely clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I need to call in a professional company to handle it?

The size and location of that mold patch indicate a persistent moisture issue, likely from the AC condensate leak. In Dubai's high humidity, mold can colonize wall cavities behind the surface very quickly.

For a patch that size, a DIY approach with vinegar is a temporary fix. It will remove the visible growth on the surface but won't address the moisture source or any hidden mold inside the wall. Bleach is not recommended; it is mostly water, which can actually feed the mold roots embedded in porous materials like drywall, and its fumes are hazardous in enclosed spaces.

The damp, earthy smell is a strong indicator that the growth is more extensive than what you see. The leak has likely created an ideal environment within the wall. The first step is to stop the leak by having an AC technician repair the unit.

Given the circumstances, a professional inspection is advised. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall's internal condition. If the moisture has penetrated the gypsum board, standard cleaning is ineffective and the affected section of drywall may need to be safely removed and replaced to prevent recurrence and potential structural issues. Remediation companies follow standards like the IICRC S520 to contain the area and prevent spores from spreading during removal.
