How to remove black mold from bedroom wall and prevent condensation?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah Park gets really cold from the AC and I just pulled the blackout curtains back to find a line of black mold along the wall behind them. It must have been growing there for months without us noticing. What's the best way to clean this off the painted wall and how can I stop the condensation buildup from the AC in the first place?

That black line is classic condensation mold, extremely common in Dubai bedrooms where cold walls meet warm, humid air trapped behind curtains.

For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. For small areas, scrub with a diluted detergent solution—avoid bleach as it doesn't kill the roots and can damage paint. Dry the area completely with a fan afterwards. However, if the mold has penetrated the drywall or the affected area is larger than a square meter, the wall material may need cutting out and replacing to properly remove the infestation. Painting over it will not solve the problem.

Prevention is about managing the temperature differential and humidity. First, raise the AC temperature slightly; a very cold setting chills the wall surface, causing moisture in the room's air to condense on it. Ensure your blackout curtains aren't pressed tightly against the wall, allowing air to circulate. Running a dehumidifier in the room, especially during peak humidity months, can significantly reduce the moisture available for condensation.

For a recurring issue like this, a professional inspection is wise to assess the wall's insulation and the AC's output. In many Dubai villas, the AC unit may be oversized for the room, leading to excessive cooling and short cycling that doesn't properly remove humidity. A certified mold assessment can also identify the species to confirm it's a common allergen and not a more problematic type, which is a service our microbiology lab provides.
