How to clean moldy closet and clothes in Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be our bedroom closet. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I just pulled out our winter clothes from the back of the built-in wardrobe, only to find several jackets and sweaters covered in fuzzy black spots. The closet is on an interior wall and feels damp. What's the most effective way to clean the clothes and the closet itself, and what dehumidifier or moisture absorber do you recommend to stop this from happening again next winter?

First, remove all affected clothing immediately to prevent spores from spreading. For washable fabrics like cotton sweaters, brush off mold outdoors and wash in hot water with a cup of white vinegar or a few drops of tea tree oil, then sun-dry thoroughly. Dry-clean-only items like wool jackets must be professionally treated; inform the cleaner about the mold.

For the closet itself, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Vacuum the interior with a HEPA filter attachment. Then, scrub all surfaces with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage materials. Let the closet dry completely with doors open and a fan circulating air before returning any items.

The dampness is likely due to Dubai's high humidity condensing on cooler interior walls. To prevent recurrence, a desiccant dehumidifier is more effective than refrigerant models in our climate, as it works better in the typical villa AC temperatures. Look for a unit with a capacity suitable for a bedroom size and a built-in hygrometer to maintain humidity below 50%. Silica gel moisture absorbers can also be placed in the closet.

For built-in wardrobes on exterior walls, this can indicate a more serious condensation or even a minor leak issue. If the mold is extensive, covers a large area, or you see staining on the walls, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is recommended to identify the hidden source of water. In many Dubai villas, this requires addressing the root cause, not just the visible mold.
