Can I clean this bathroom mold myself or call a professional« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has been turning black for a while now, and after last week's humidity, I just noticed a few small fuzzy patches on the ceiling. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it's starting to spread behind the toilet too. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company?

Small surface mold on grout can often be managed with diligent cleaning. For the black spots in your shower, a solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner is more effective and safer than bleach, which only removes surface discoloration. Scrub thoroughly and ensure the area is completely dry afterwards.

However, the fuzzy patches on the ceiling and spread behind the toilet are significant red flags. This pattern suggests a persistent moisture issue, likely from high ambient humidity, condensation from your AC system, or a hidden leak. In Dubai's climate, where bathrooms are constantly battling moisture from showers and humidity, surface cleaning often only provides a temporary fix if the underlying cause isn't addressed.

For widespread or recurring growth, especially fuzzy patches, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can identify the moisture source—whether it's inadequate ventilation, a plumbing leak, or condensation from cold AC ducts in the ceiling. Proper remediation involves containing the area, safely removing the contaminated materials, and applying antimicrobial treatments. The key is fixing the humidity or water problem first; otherwise, the mold will almost certainly return, regardless of how thoroughly you clean.
