Is black mold urgent for kids' cough in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I've just found a patch of black fuzzy stuff behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We've lived in this Jumeirah Park villa for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from all the humidity lately. How urgent is it that we get this professionally cleaned, or can I handle it myself with bleach this weekend?

Black mold in Dubai homes is a serious concern, especially with children experiencing a persistent cough. The combination of high humidity and year-round AC use creates ideal conditions for mold growth, as condensation often forms on cold walls behind furniture.

For a small, visible patch (less than one square foot) that you've just discovered, you can clean it yourself. However, do not use bleach. It is mostly water and can worsen the problem by feeding the mold roots. Instead, use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide or a solution of white vinegar and water. Scrub the area, ensure it is completely dry, and fix the moisture source—this is often poor ventilation or a cold spot from AC.

Given the symptoms and the location (a bedroom), a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The patch behind the wardrobe is likely just the visible tip; mold frequently grows inside wall cavities where condensation occurs. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to identify the full extent of the problem and the root cause. They can also take an air or surface sample for lab analysis to confirm the species, as "black mold" is a broad term and not all types are equally concerning.

This approach is urgent. Prolonged exposure to mold spores can exacerbate respiratory issues like coughing, particularly in children. The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines on indoor air quality, and remediation should be done to these standards to ensure the problem is resolved correctly and doesn't recur. Handling a larger infestation improperly can aerosolize spores and spread them throughout your home.
