How to prevent closet mold in humid climates?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Arabian Ranches has started getting this black speckled mold on leather bags and shoes. We had a lot of humidity last month and I think the lack of air circulation in there is the main culprit. What’s the most effective way to stop this from coming back every winter—should I get a dehumidifier, a special kind of moisture absorber, or is there a better solution?

Your situation is very common in Dubai villas, especially during the humid winter months when AC use decreases. The black speckling is likely a surface mold feeding on dust and organic material on your leather goods, exacerbated by the temperature differential between the cool outside wall and the warm, stagnant air inside the closet.

The most effective long-term solution is a multi-step approach. Start by thoroughly cleaning the affected items with a leather-safe disinfectant and the closet interior with a diluted vinegar or detergent solution. For prevention, air circulation is critical. Leave the closet doors ajar regularly and consider installing a small, battery-operated vent fan or a louvered door to promote airflow.

A desiccant-based moisture absorber, like silica gel canisters, can help in a small, enclosed space, but its capacity is limited. A small electric dehumidifier is more effective for a villa closet, but it requires emptying a collection tank and only addresses the symptom. The core issue is often a slight condensation leak or insufficient insulation in the external wall itself.

For a recurring problem, a professional inspection is warranted to identify any hidden condensation points or thermal bridging in the wall cavity. They can perform a non-invasive moisture scan to see if the wall's internal moisture content is elevated, which a simple dehumidifier cannot resolve. Addressing that underlying cause is the only way to stop it from returning every season.
