Can I clean AC-induced black mold myself with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom has been leaking a bit and now I’ve spotted black mold on the back of the wardrobe that’s against the wall. It’s been slowly getting worse over the last couple of months, and I'm worried about it spreading. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from ACE, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company?

That depends on the size and severity. For a small, contained patch (less than one square foot) on a non-porous surface like metal or tile, a thorough cleaning with a dedicated mould cleaner is often manageable.

In your case, the mould is on a porous surface (wardrobe wood) and is a result of a persistent AC leak. This suggests a deeper moisture issue. Bleach is not recommended; it only removes surface discoloration on porous materials but leaves the root mould structure intact, allowing it to regrow. You need a cleaner designed to penetrate and kill mould at its root.

However, the critical first step is to stop the source of moisture. You must have the AC leak repaired by a qualified HVAC technician. Without fixing the leak, any cleaning is temporary, and the mould will return quickly in Dubai's humid climate.

Given the location in a bedroom and the description of it "slowly getting worse," a professional assessment is strongly advised. They can identify the full extent of the growth, which is often more widespread than what is visible, and ensure it is removed safely to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the room during cleaning. For situations involving porous materials and ongoing water damage, professional remediation is the most reliable solution to ensure the indoor environment is returned to a healthy state.
