How urgent is AC mold in my Dubai apartment?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC in the master bedroom of our Jumeirah apartment has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for the last couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a few small black spots in the corner that smell really musty. With this humidity, I’m worried it’s spreading fast. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

That situation requires immediate professional attention; it's urgent. The combination of persistent water from a leak and Dubai's high humidity creates the perfect environment for mold to proliferate, often within wall cavities and under carpets where you can't see it. Black spots and a musty odor are strong indicators of an active colony.
Attempting to clean it yourself with bleach is not recommended. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on non-porous materials and does not address the root moisture problem. On porous surfaces like drywall or carpet backing, bleach can't penetrate to kill the roots, and the water content in bleach can actually feed the mold, causing it to return worse. More critically, disturbing the colony without proper containment can aerosolize spores, spreading them throughout your apartment and significantly increasing the risk of respiratory issues. For a leak of several weeks, the extent of the damage is likely beyond a surface clean. A professional assessment is critical to identify the full scope, including the source of the AC leak, moisture levels in building materials, and the specific mold species present. They will follow protocols for containment, safe removal of contaminated porous materials like wet carpet or drywall, and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination. Resolving the AC leak itself is the first and most crucial step to prevent recurrence. |
