How to permanently stop mold in closet on damp wall?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting black fuzzy mold on our leather bags and shoes. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I first noticed it about two weeks after that really heavy dew period we had last month. The room feels damp even with the AC running constantly. What’s the most effective way to get rid of it for good and what can I do to stop the humidity from coming through that wall?

The mold on your leather goods is a symptom of high humidity and condensation, likely from that heavy dew event we had. The wall is probably cooler than the room's dew point, causing moisture to condense on its surface inside the closet, creating the perfect environment for mold.

For immediate action, clean the affected items with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated leather cleaner. Wipe down all closet surfaces with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution. However, this is only a temporary fix.

The permanent solution requires addressing the moisture source. First, improve air circulation. Leave the closet doors open and use a portable dehumidifier or a fan in the bedroom to reduce ambient humidity. Ensure your AC unit is set to a consistently cool temperature, as fluctuating settings can increase humidity levels. Check that the AC drain line is not clogged, as this can cause the system to dump excess moisture into your home's air.

The core issue is likely the wall itself. In many Dubai villas, external walls can act as a "cold bridge," where the outside heat and humidity meet the cool interior AC temperatures, leading to condensation within the wall cavity. This requires professional remediation. A certified inspector can use a thermal imaging camera to identify the exact condensation points and a moisture meter to quantify the problem.

The fix often involves creating a vapor barrier on the interior side of the external wall to prevent humid air from penetrating and condensing. This is specialized work. For a situation involving structural moisture and valuable possessions, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to diagnose the wall's condition and prescribe the correct, permanent solution.
