How to treat black mold behind wardrobe for good?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It's an interior wall, and with the AC running constantly, I'm worried the dampness is spreading. What's the best way to treat this myself to stop it from coming back and improve the air quality?

The black spots behind your wardrobe are likely mold, a very common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation on cooler interior walls. For a small, visible patch, you can clean it yourself, but the key is addressing the moisture source to prevent it from returning.

First, move the wardrobe to fully expose the wall. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning solution, not bleach, as bleach only removes the color and does not kill the roots. Allow the area to dry completely. To inhibit future growth, consider applying a mold-inhibiting primer before repainting.

The underlying cause is almost certainly poor air circulation and a cold spot on the wall. To stop it from coming back, leave a few inches of space between the wardrobe and the wall to allow air to flow. A small dehumidifier in the room can also help manage ambient moisture levels, especially during the more humid winter months.

However, since your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms, this indicates the mold may have released spores into your indoor air. DIY cleaning addresses the visible problem but not the potential air quality issue. For health concerns, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can perform air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and spore count, which determines the actual risk level and ensures the remediation is fully resolved, protecting your family's health.
