How to treat AC mold on wall and carpet?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little onto the carpet for a while, but now I’m seeing a bunch of black spots spreading up the bottom of the wall behind the nightstand. The room has started to smell damp and my allergies have been awful this week. What's the most effective way to treat this myself before I have to call a professional?

Stop using the AC immediately and address the moisture source first. The leak is feeding the mold growth. Move the nightstand to fully expose the affected area on the wall and carpet.
For the wall, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be applied to the black spots. Scrub gently with a stiff brush, then allow the area to dry completely. In Dubai's humidity, use a dehumidifier or fan to accelerate drying; simply opening a window often introduces more humid air. The carpet is more problematic. If the leak has soaked into the carpet pad underneath, topical cleaning won't be sufficient. You must lift the carpet to inspect and dry the pad and floor slab. A wet-dry vacuum can extract standing water. Be aware that what's visible on the surface is often just a fraction of the actual growth, especially if the leak has been ongoing. The damp smell and aggravated allergies strongly suggest a deeper infestation within the wall cavity or AC unit itself. Self-treatment addresses surface contamination but rarely resolves the root cause. Given the symptoms and extent, a professional inspection is advised to assess the wall interior and AC drip pan/ductwork. They can identify the specific mold type and provide a remediation plan that addresses the hidden moisture and biological growth, which is critical for health and preventing structural damage in our climate. |
