How to permanently remove and prevent black mold in humid bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our bathroom in the JVC villa has been feeling way more humid than usual since the weather started getting hotter. I’ve just pulled back the silicone sealant around the shower and found a ton of black, fuzzy mold growing underneath it. It’s even creeping up a few of the wall tiles. What’s the most effective way to kill this for good and stop it from coming back, especially with this humidity?

Black mold under silicone sealant in a UAE bathroom is a common issue, directly fueled by our high humidity levels and condensation from hot showers meeting cold AC-chilled surfaces. The most effective removal requires addressing both the visible growth and the underlying moisture problem.

For immediate removal, cut away and discard all compromised silicone sealant—it’s porous and cannot be fully sanitized. Scrub the exposed area with a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner, not bleach, as bleach only surface-bleaches mold and does not kill the roots. Ensure the area is completely dry before reapplying a high-quality, mold-resistant silicone sealant.

Permanent prevention hinges on moisture control. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If condensation forms on walls and mirrors, your fan is likely underpowered; upgrading to a higher-capacity model is often necessary. Wipe down wet surfaces after use and consider a portable dehumidifier for particularly problematic rooms. For mold that has spread behind tiles or extensively across walls, professional inspection is advised to assess hidden damage and ensure proper remediation, as the structural integrity of the wall may be compromised.
