How to safely clean and prevent wardrobe mold from AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in my master bedroom has been leaking a bit, and now I'm seeing black spots along the bottom of the wardrobe on the wall behind it. We've lived in this Jumeirah Park villa for two years and never had this before the recent humidity. What's the most effective way to clean this safely and prevent it from coming back, especially with the summer coming?

The black spots are likely mold growth from the moisture of the AC leak. For a small, surface-level area, you can clean it yourself. First, fix the AC leak—this is the most critical step to prevent immediate regrowth. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, lightly mist the area, and gently scrub with a microfiber cloth. Avoid bleach; it only removes the color and can push spores deeper into porous surfaces like drywall or wood.

Given Dubai's high humidity, especially in summer, simply cleaning the surface is often not enough. Mold can grow inside the wall cavity behind the wardrobe, which you cannot see. The most effective prevention is to ensure the area is completely dry. Use a dehumidifier in the room and move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation.

For a recurring or larger issue, a professional inspection is recommended to assess hidden damage. They can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find dampness inside the wall that will continue to cause problems. If the wall is significantly compromised, the affected drywall may need to be removed and replaced. Once the source is fixed and the area is dry, repainting with a mold-inhibiting primer provides a final layer of protection.
