Is my AC leak causing toxic black mold illness?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to have been leaking a bit, and now I’ve found these black, fuzzy patches spreading on the wall behind my bedroom wardrobe. My throat has been feeling scratchy for the last couple of weeks and I’m waking up with headaches. Is this black mold, and could it be the reason I’ve been feeling so unwell?

The black patches are likely Stachybotrys chartarum, often called "toxic black mold," which thrives in the chronic dampness from an AC leak. Your symptoms—scratchy throat, headaches, and waking up with discomfort—are commonly reported with exposure to its mycotoxins, especially in a confined space like a bedroom.

In Dubai’s climate, AC systems constantly combat high humidity. A leak creates a permanent moisture source, allowing this type of mold to establish itself quickly behind furniture where airflow is restricted. The first step is to stop the moisture source; have an HVAC technician repair the leak immediately.

For the mold itself, professional remediation is strongly advised. Disturbing it improperly can aerosolize a high concentration of spores and toxins throughout your apartment. Remediation involves containment, HEPA-filtered air scrubbing, and safe removal of contaminated materials like drywall. A professional inspection can confirm the species and extent of the problem.

After remediation, request a post-clearance test to verify spore counts have returned to safe, ambient levels. This is the only way to confirm the environment is healthy. Your symptoms should be discussed with a physician, as they can advise on any supportive care needed.
