How to clean and prevent AC mold in Jumeirah wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little, and now I’ve found black spots spreading on the back wall of my built-in wardrobe in Jumeirah. The smell is really musty and I'm worried it's going to ruin my clothes. What’s the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from happening again once I get the AC unit fixed?

Stop using the AC immediately and address the leak at its source; the moisture feeding the mold must be resolved first by an HVAC technician. The black spots are likely Stachybotrys or Cladosporium, common in Dubai's humid climate when condensation from AC units creates a persistent damp environment.

For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. For non-porous surfaces like the wardrobe's back wall, scrub with a diluted detergent solution. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can worsen indoor air quality. For porous materials like drywall or wood where the mold has penetrated, cutting out and replacing the affected section is often the only permanent solution. All cleaning is futile if the underlying moisture issue is not fixed.

To prevent recurrence, ensure the HVAC technician not only fixes the leak but also checks the drain pan and condensate drain line for blockages, a frequent cause. After repair, improve air circulation in the closet; leaving the wardrobe doors slightly ajar can help. Consider using a renewable desiccant like silica gel to manage the micro-climate.

Given the spread and musty smell, this indicates an established colony. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent, especially if the wall is shared or the wardrobe is built-in, as hidden growth behind it is likely. They can perform moisture mapping and air testing to verify the space is truly resolved after remediation.
