How to permanently remove mold from bedroom closet wall?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting patches of black mold on the leather bags and shoes we stored there. We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed this after the recent humid weather. I wiped it down with vinegar, but I'm worried it's coming from inside the wall itself and will just come back. What is the most effective way to treat this for good and what should I check to prevent it from returning?

Black mold in a closet on an exterior wall points to a condensation issue, very common in Jumeirah villas due to the high humidity and temperature differential between air-conditioned rooms and warm exterior walls. Vinegar only addresses surface growth; the underlying moisture problem remains.

First, identify the moisture source. It is likely condensation from the "cold bridge" effect where the AC-chilled interior meets the humid outdoor air. Check for any plumbing leaks in that wall, but condensation is the prime suspect. Move all contents out immediately to prevent further damage.

For permanent removal, the wall must be dried and the mold source remediated. Scrubbing with a detergent solution can remove visible growth, but if the mold has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the backing, those sections likely need to be cut out and replaced by a professional remediation team to prevent regrowth. This is a case where a professional inspection is warranted to assess the wall cavity's condition without destructive testing.

The critical step is preventing its return by controlling humidity. Ensure the room's AC is running consistently to dehumidify the space, even when the room is unoccupied. Install a moisture-absorbing product like a desiccant bag in the closet. For a long-term solution, improve air circulation by keeping closet doors slightly ajar and consider having a technician check if your AC’s dehumidification cycle is functioning optimally for the room's size. Addressing the thermal bridge itself may require additional wall insulation, a common retrofit in older UAE villas.
