How to permanently remove black mold from wardrobe safely?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I just pulled their wooden wardrobe away from the wall in our Deira apartment and found a huge patch of black mold growing behind it, probably from the humidity. I think it’s been there since the weather started getting really sticky a month ago. What’s the best way to handle this safely and permanently, and should I call one of those professional mold removal companies here or is it something I can tackle myself with the right products?

The safest first step is to get a professional inspection to identify the mold species, as some black molds can be more problematic than others. Given the size of the patch and that it's affecting your children's health, a lab analysis is the most reliable way to assess the risk and determine the correct remediation protocol.

For a smaller, contained area, you can handle it yourself with proper precautions. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Move the wardrobe to a well-ventilated area. Scrub the mold off the wall and furniture with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and doesn't kill the roots on porous surfaces. After scrubbing, disinfect with a dedicated mold-cleaning product, then allow everything to dry completely.

However, permanent removal requires fixing the moisture source. In a Deira apartment, this is almost certainly due to condensation from the high humidity, exacerbated by the wardrobe being tightly against the wall, trapping cold, damp air from your AC. To prevent recurrence, you must keep the wardrobe a few inches away from the wall to allow air circulation. A dehumidifier in the room or ensuring your AC is running efficiently to manage humidity levels is crucial.

Given the health symptoms and the scale of the growth, a professional service is strongly recommended. They will not only remove the visible mold but also use air scrubbers to capture spores, treat the area with antimicrobial solutions, and most importantly, identify the exact condensation issue to prevent it from returning. Look for a provider that offers before-and-after testing to verify the space has been returned to a healthy baseline.
