How to clean and prevent AC closet mold recurrence?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom closet seems to be leaking a little, and now we’ve found a patch of black mold on the back wall and on some of our shoes. We had the AC unit serviced, but I’m worried the mold will just come back because of the humidity. What’s the best way to clean this ourselves and what can we do to stop the moisture from building up again in that specific spot?

For the black mold on the wall and shoes, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective for non-porous surfaces. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the wall thoroughly. For porous items like shoes, professional cleaning or disposal is often necessary, as spores embed deeply.
The serviced AC unit is likely not the root cause; the leak and resulting humidity are. You must find and repair the water leak—it could be from the AC condensate drain line, a pipe, or seepage from outside. Until the moisture source is fixed, the mold will almost certainly return. To manage Dubai's high humidity in that enclosed space, improve air circulation. Leave the closet door open as much as possible. A small, plug-in dehumidifier or desiccant bags inside the closet can help reduce ambient moisture. Ensure the AC unit's condensate drain line is clear and properly draining away from the structure. Given the location in a closet and the leak, this indicates a persistent moisture issue. For a complete resolution and to ensure the mold hasn't spread inside the wall cavity, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is highly recommended to identify the full extent of the problem. |
