Is black mold behind closet causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last few weeks and we can't figure out why. I was just moving some storage boxes in our walk-in closet and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold on the back wall behind the shelves. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and the closet is on the outside wall. Is this type of mold dangerous and who should I call to get it properly removed?

The black mold you discovered is very likely contributing to your children's persistent cough. While the term "black mold" is often used for Stachybotrys chartarum, many dark-colored molds can cause similar respiratory irritation, including coughing, congestion, and worsened allergy symptoms. The humid climate in Dubai, especially in coastal areas like Jumeirah, creates perfect conditions for mold growth on exterior walls where temperature differences cause condensation.

You should treat this as a serious indoor air quality issue. Do not attempt to remove it yourself, as disturbing the colony will release a large number of spores into your home's air. The first step is to contact a professional mold inspection company that can properly assess the extent of the problem, identify the species through lab testing, and locate the moisture source.

For a villa, the issue is often a combination of high external humidity and a slight leak or thermal bridging in the wall. A reputable remediation provider will follow DM guidelines, contain the area, use HEPA filtration to clean the air, and address the underlying dampness to prevent recurrence. Ask any company you contact about their testing protocols and verification process to ensure the mold is fully removed.
