How to permanently remove mold from my Jumeirah apartment closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has developed these black speckles on the back wall, and all our clothes have a damp, musty smell. This started a couple of months ago and seems to be getting worse, even though I run the AC constantly. I’m worried it’s affecting our health and ruining our things. What is the most effective way to completely eliminate this mold and prevent it from coming back for good?

That pattern of black speckles and the musty smell are classic signs of a mold colony, and your constant AC use in a Jumeirah apartment points to the likely cause: a cold spot and condensation. The closet's back wall is probably an exterior wall chilled by the AC, causing humid air to condense on it, creating the perfect damp environment for mold.

Permanent removal is a two-step process: fixing the moisture source and properly remediating the existing growth. Simply wiping it with bleach is ineffective and can spread spores.

First, identify and stop the moisture. For a closet on an exterior wall, the issue is often insufficient insulation or a significant temperature difference. Keep the closet doors open as much as possible to allow conditioned air to circulate and prevent stagnant, humid pockets. A small, battery-powered dehumidifier or moisture absorber placed inside the closet can also help significantly.

For remediation, the wall and affected contents need proper cleaning. For porous materials like drywall or wood, the mold often grows deep within. Scrubbing the surface may not be enough, and the wall may need to be treated with specialized antimicrobial solutions or, in severe cases, replaced. All affected clothing must be professionally laundered at high temperatures or dry-cleaned to kill the spores; washing normally may not remove the smell or the allergen.

To ensure it doesn't return, the root cause must be addressed. A professional inspection can identify the exact condensation source—sometimes it's a small HVAC leak or a need for better insulation—and properly remediate the colony to prevent it from spreading. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue, and a science-driven approach with before-and-after testing is the only way to verify the problem is truly resolved.
