Is it safe to remove black mold myself with kids?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our youngest son's bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It's been especially humid lately and his allergies have been terrible, which is what made me go looking. What's the best way to handle this safely with kids in the house, and should I call a professional company or can I tackle it myself with products from Ace Hardware?

It depends on the size of the patch and the underlying cause. For a small area (under one square foot), DIY removal can be safe with strict precautions. The high humidity in Dubai, especially during summer and in AC-cooled homes, creates perfect conditions for mold behind furniture and in closets where airflow is restricted.

Start by isolating the area. Keep your son and any other children completely out of the room during the process. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety goggles to protect yourself. Before cleaning, lightly mist the mold with water to prevent spores from becoming airborne. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid using bleach, as it can irritate the lungs and often doesn't address the root cause. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely; a dehumidifier is highly recommended to counteract the ambient humidity.

However, since the mold was hidden and your son's allergies have worsened, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg; the moisture source could be a small condensation leak from an AC duct in the wall, a minor plumbing seepage, or simply chronic dampness from the climate. Disturbing it improperly can aerosolize spores throughout the room. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact moisture source and assess the full extent, which is critical for a permanent solution. For a child's bedroom, this verification is the safest course of action.
