How to permanently fix black shower mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has started turning black, especially in the corners. We're in an older building in Bur Dubai and even with the window open, the humidity just lingers for ages after a shower. I'm worried it's spreading behind the tiles. What's the most effective long-term solution to kill this mold and prevent it from coming back in our Dubai climate?

Black shower mold in older Bur Dubai buildings is almost always due to persistent high humidity, as the ventilation often can't keep up with the climate. The black substance is typically a surface mold, but it can indicate a deeper moisture problem behind the tiles if the grout is cracked or deteriorating.

For a lasting solution, surface cleaning alone is insufficient. Start by using a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar, scrubbing thoroughly. However, this only addresses the visible growth. The core issue is the trapped moisture. Install a high-quality exhaust fan if you don't have one and run it for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wiping down the shower walls and squeegeeing glass doors immediately after use is critical to remove standing water.

In the long term, the grout itself is the weak point. For a permanent fix, the old, porous grout must be completely removed and replaced with a high-quality, mold-inhibiting epoxy grout, which is far more resistant to moisture penetration. Ensure all seals around the shower are intact. If the mold returns quickly or you suspect it has spread behind the tiles—indicated by a musty smell or tiles feeling loose—a professional inspection with borescope cameras can assess the wall cavity without destructive testing. This is the only way to confirm or rule out hidden growth, which requires a different remediation approach.
