How to permanently stop bedroom AC mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our bedroom AC unit in our Jumeirah apartment has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I’ve spotted some black fuzzy patches starting to form on the skirting board behind the bed. I’ve wiped it down with vinegar, but I’m worried it’s just going to keep coming back because the carpet underneath still feels damp. What is the most effective way to permanently deal with this and stop the mold from spreading, especially with the humidity rising again?

The root cause is the AC leak, not the visible mold. In Dubai's climate, any dampness from AC condensate creates a perfect environment for mold to recur.
First, address the water source. Turn off the AC unit and call an HVAC technician to fix the leak, which is likely a blocked condensate drain line—an extremely common issue here. Until it's repaired, the moisture problem will persist. For the affected area, vinegar only addresses surface mold. The damp carpet and skirting board likely have mold growing deep within. You must dry it out completely. Move the bed, pull back the carpet if possible, and use powerful fans and a dehumidifier for at least 48-72 hours. Simply wiping and allowing it to air dry in our humid air is insufficient. Once completely dry, the porous materials (like the back of the skirting board and carpet backing) may still harbor mold roots and require professional cleaning or replacement to prevent spores from becoming airborne. For a recurring issue already embedded in building materials, a professional inspection with moisture mapping and possibly air testing is the most effective way to determine the full extent and get a permanent solution. This verifies the cleanup was successful and the spore count has returned to safe levels. |
