Mold behind toilet: handyman or specialist in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed the paint in the corner behind the toilet is bubbling up with black mold. The AC vent is right there, and I think the condensation over time has caused it. I’ve tried wiping it with vinegar but it keeps coming back. Is this a job for a handyman or do I need a specialized mold removal company, and what’s the typical cost in Dubai for something like this?

A recurring mold issue like this, especially with bubbling paint, indicates a persistent moisture problem that a simple wipe-down won't fix. In Dubai's climate, this is almost certainly due to condensation from the AC unit above, creating a constant damp environment.

You need to address the source first. A handyman can repaint, but without fixing the condensation, the mold will return in weeks. The AC may need its drain line unclogged or insulation checked to prevent cold air from hitting the warm wall. For a small, contained area, a skilled handyman who understands moisture control could handle the repair after the AC issue is resolved.

However, if the mold has spread behind the wall or you see extensive discoloration, a specialist is necessary. They will use moisture meters to find the full extent of the problem, remove contaminated materials safely to prevent spore dispersal, and apply antimicrobial treatments. The key difference is a specialist provides verification that the mold is gone, often through post-remediation testing.

Costs vary significantly. A simple handyman fix for the AC drip and a repaint is a relatively minor expense. A full remediation project that involves opening the wall, treating the cavity, and verifying results with a lab report will be a more considerable investment. For an accurate scope and cost, a professional inspection is your best first step.
