How to treat and prevent closet mold on clothes?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet on the outside wall has a persistent damp smell, and I just found small black spots on a few of my winter jackets. This started around the time the humidity really kicked in last month, and it's in the room we use the most. What's the most effective way to treat this myself to save the clothes and what can I do to stop it from coming back every summer?

The black spots on your jackets are likely mould, a common issue in Dubai's high humidity, especially on exterior walls where condensation can form. Immediately remove the affected clothes to prevent further contamination.
For the clothes, do not simply wash them as this can set the stains. Dry clean them, as the solvents are most effective at killing mould spores and removing the spots. If dry cleaning isn't an option, sun-drying the items for several hours can help kill surface spores before a hot wash. For non-washable items, a thorough sunning is your best initial step. To treat the closet itself, mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Wipe down all interior surfaces—walls, shelves, and rods—with this solution. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and not the root organism, and its fumes can be hazardous in an enclosed space. Allow the closet to dry completely with the doors open before returning any items. Preventing recurrence requires managing humidity. This closet is likely a cold spot where moisture from the air condenses. Ensure the room's AC is running consistently, even when you're out, to maintain a stable temperature and dehumidify the air. Leave the closet doors ajar to promote airflow. Consider using a desiccant dehumidifier, like a rechargeable silica gel unit, inside the closet to absorb excess moisture. For a more permanent solution, have an AC technician check if the room's unit is properly sized and that the cold air supply isn't directly contributing to condensation on that wall. If the mould returns after these measures or covers a large area (more than one square meter), a professional inspection is recommended to identify any hidden moisture sources within the wall itself. |
