How to permanently remove shower mold and who reseals it?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I just pulled back the silicone sealant around the shower and found a ton of black mold growing underneath. It's been so humid lately that the walls never seem to fully dry out. What is the most effective way to kill this for good and who should I call to reseal it properly to prevent it from coming back?

Black mold under silicone sealant is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from constant AC use. The most effective removal requires addressing both the visible growth and the underlying moisture problem.

For the mold, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated EPA-approved mold remover applied directly to the area is more effective than bleach, which often only bleaches the surface. Scrub thoroughly and allow the area to dry completely. This is a temporary fix if the moisture issue persists.

The permanent solution is professional removal and correct resealing. The current sealant must be completely scraped out, the substrate beneath treated with an antimicrobial solution, and the area dried with industrial equipment. A professional will then apply a high-quality, mold-resistant silicone sealant.

For a case this advanced, with mold hidden behind sealant, a certified mold inspector can identify the full extent and recommend a remediation specialist. In the UAE, look for providers certified by institutions like the IICRC. They ensure the job is done to international standards, preventing rapid regrowth. Proper remediation, combined with improving bathroom ventilation by running the exhaust fan longer, is the only way to stop it from coming back.
